Chapter 5
Merit
“Man, sit down somewhere. All that pacing you doin’ got me tired. We know you worried about our baby mama, but, damn, you don’t see me doing all that shit!”
Merit stopped and sent Melvin a look that told him that now was not the time for his twisted sense of humor. After the police had arrived, Ali passed out. They didn’t bother calling an ambulance. Merit and Jason rushed her to the hospital themselves. Melvin and the rest of the crew met them there, after a frantic phone call from Jason.
When they made it to the hospital, she was rushed to a trauma room. The doctor had informed Merit that she was bleeding. He had been sent to the waiting room over an hour ago and had lost all patience for people period.
“The fuck you mean I can’t see my baby right now?! I’m her mama! I have a right to be in that room with her!” Shonda yelled at the receptionist.
“I’m sorry, ma’am, but the doctor left specific instructions that Ms. Johnson is not to have any visitors at this time. If you’d like, you can sit in the waiting room with all of the other visitors,” the nurse stated nervously.
“Do I look like I want to wait to visit my child?”
“Mi amor, calm down. You’re making a scene. Are you trying to get kicked out of here?” Ruiz reasoned.
“Fine,” she stated sharply while pointing at the nurse. “He just saved ya’ll ass.” She stalked towards the waiting room as Ruiz nodded politely at the nurse.
The sound of the woman’s voice sent a chill down Merit’s spine as he looked at his friends’ facial expression to see which one had called Ali’s mother. He specifically said not to call and tell her that Ali was in the ER because he wasn’t trying to get kicked out of the damn place. Shonda could be fun to hang around, but she had a temper that caused her and anyone associated with her to get kicked out of places. Scanning the men, he quickly landed on a fidgety Allen.
“Really, Al? I told you not to call her.”
“Sorry, I just thought that her mother would like to know what was going on with her child that had been missing for a week. But I was wrong for filling her only blood relative in on what was happening,” Allen stated sarcastically.
“Oh, shut up. You know that Merit didn’t ask us not to tell because he wanted to keep her out of the loop. She’s a damn hothead, and Ali don’t need to be around that right now, dumbass. Now do you see why we rarely fill your ass in on shit?” Jason questioned.
“Yeah, Al. You too damn honest. That’s why you still single. Don’t no woman want a man that’s honest all the damn time. You got to lie to them from time to time to show them you care,” Melvin said with a chuckle. “Example, if your woman asks, ‘Baby, does my
